Having resized and created partitions on many a mounted drive under OS X, I'm fairly confident that's not the reason you have to reboot. You do have to reboot to replace a kernel with a new version, so I'd expect that to be the core reason why you have to restart…though there are other reasons as well…not the lest of which is the complexity of replacing running processes with new versions without breaking anything.

Easy as reinstalling Snow Leopard. Assuming, of course, that you have a copy of the install disk that you can use and have a working backup.
If you have a drive image, then it's just a matter of restoring it.

Umm…you're considering upgrading OS X and you run pro tools? WTF? Just a friendly warning…the last time I did that, it was 6 months before Pro Tools would start again thanks to a combination of incompatibility and licensing issues. The HD3 system I use at school is still running Leopard and PT 8 for just that reason.
DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR OS IF YOU RUN PRO TOOLS UNTIL AVID TELLS YOU TO DO IT!
If you're going to try that, please for the love of god have a disk image backup.

According to them, Traktor Pro 2.0.1 works fine.
Logic 9 has some issues.
Logic 8 doesn't work at all.
Maschine isn't on the list.
Aleton Live 8.2.1 and 8.2.2 are supposed to work.
Pro Tools does not work at all.
Scratch Live has issues.
Itch isn't listed at all.
And apparently they might have screwed with Core Audio some.
Oh, and Quicksilver beta 60 is supposed to work…if anyone cares.
Does anyone understand NI's licensing well enough to know whether or not I can install an external and run Maschine off my internal drive without going to jail for supposedly pirating software that I own?
