From our very own blog: http://www.djtechtools.com/2008/06/0...e-without-mac/

"As for Platinum Notes, it doesn't filter or compress, it starts by reducing the volume, then removing clipped peaks, then it expands back in an intelligent way the squashed parts of the song."

Thanks Bento, no worries on the PM situation.

Yeah i realise it does that, but i am of the opinion that compressing the file into mp3, then having it converted to .wav to PN can do its work on the file, then PN recompressing the file into mp3 is going to cause quality loss.

Other mp3 gain programs arnt actually uncompressing the file and doing this though, all they basicly do is scan the file then edit only the id3 tags so you get 0 quality loss though this process.

When im talking compression here im not talking about the studio kind of compressor, im talking about the mp3 compression which is totally different

My bad, I was reading it as having to do with file compression. I caught my finger under a hammer this mornin and was a still little woozy with shock when I was on the boards!

Where is that DJMoniker when you need her?

I feel like I'm beginning to flog this thread to death

So I ran my collection through MP3Gain and used a target volume of 89dB (the recommended target volume)

So now, in theory at least, I should be able to leave my gain knobs alone and turn off auto gain and my tracks should all have a similar volume? (Correct me if I am missing something here)

If so I can sacrifice a lamb to the God of DJ'ing thanking him that I am one step closer to a working set up.

In theory yes, but tpro should actually handle that on it's own with autogain! The advantage of platinum notes is it does more than just adjust the gain/normalize, it adjusts dymanics.

Yes, this does cause a "loss in quality" although the difference is VERY negligable.

    Thanks Mon.

Maybe I've been buying too much into other people's misgivings about it, but auto-gain can't always be relied upon, no?

Oh I wish, I wish I could shell out for PN. But I've so much stuff to get and no job with which to earn the necessary squids. I have a sound engineering course starting after summer and need to get my hands on an M-Box. Not to mention upgrading my VCI with new firmware and knobs.

I plan on winning the lotto any day now.

the autogain in tpro is no more/less accurate than mp3gain, IMO. So relying on either one is a mistake I think.

I personally still dont even rely on PN to adjust my levels. I still use my ears and LED indicators!

    Sigh.

Well I'm still only playing in my loft, mixing internally and out through a hi-fi so no LED monitoring for me.

I hoped that I could have my tracks somewhat prepared so that (if?? when??) the time comes that I'm playing through a system I wouldn't have to worry so much about my outputs.

Sorry, there really is no easy end all be all solution. Part of a DJs job is to watch levels and make sure the level is consistent and smooth. We can reduce the amount we have to watch/worry about it, but it should still always be on your mind (ear?). Even moldover with his super fancy setup, smart mixer, and pre-eqd tracks has gain knobs!
