I practice facing into the room because I need to see the tv to mix video. I often just sit on the couch with my controller in my lap, though.

Function over form argument doesn't make sense because most people who have DJ setups face out are more functional and look better.

Why would you want to stare at a wall and why does it bother you so much that people like to face out into a room? If I'm hanging out with other DJs we're probably going to be mixing and often hang out for this purpose, and we always mix at my place because my setup is big, open, and much more better suited than his which is cramped in his bedroom against a wall on his desk. Mine is also at real booth height since I built it to be like one.

If I put that up against a wall it would look ugly compared to now where it looks like it is meant to be there, I would lose storage on both sides, I couldn't turn my monitors around and be set to throw a party, I couldn't look at anyone who I'm chilling and mixing with if they're not next to me, I couldn't look at my TV or another wall which I eventually plan to project visuals on and VJ, and I would gain a whopping 2' of extra space to run around and jerk off in my living room.

What would I gain by turning it around and sliding the whole thing two feet backwards?

Xonetacular - that is a sweet fuckin' set-up you've got there.

This thread is about as relevant as a Mac vs. PC thread.

It's just a space issue. If you've got space, use it. if you haven't, then you can't...
    DJ'ing: 2x1200MK2, DJM 850, Dicers, F1, Zomo MC-1000, Sony MDR-v700, i7 Win 10 HP Envy
Production: Ableton Live 8 and a mouse, Sennheiser HD400, Sony VAIO

i really think that this thread is irrelevant whatsoever it's all about hearing the music ain't it whether it be facing the wall or not. the first time i ever see a comment regarding this i couldn't help but laugh, even facing the wall at home becomes an issue, wtf?????. i mean being at home is suppose to be where we feel the most comfortable whether it be facing the wall or not, if it becomes an issue to others than screw it and it's my choice, because end of the day it's my home set-up. come on as long as the music can be heard during practise session at home is all that matters. besides if my friends were to come over and hang out in my room i would want them to see and know what i'm doing so as for them to get a first hand experience on what the hell im pressing or manipulating. ain't home set-ups be just practise sessions for all of us. to me, what would be nice and having something different is if you have a big space, what would be a more out of the box layout is to have a table in the middle and having your friends crowd around you in circle around the table. i really think it is more interactive this way. for example something like this.

Please explain how an ineffecient use of space helps your equipment work better and your mixes sound tighter. I would enjoy employing your techniques at home myself and look forward to understanding the science behind it so I may take advantage myself.

By that logic you might as well set up against the wall at the club, It'll free up more dancefloor.

For many people here it seems that the social interaction with their household is an important part of the setup. Like having an open floorplan between your kitchen and living areas, not at all necessary to cook a meal, but it makes the experience more comfortable for the people involved.

If you're producing or are locked in your bedroom by yourself I suppose it doesn't matter, but in the livingroom with friends/roomates/family around I think many of us are more comfortable not having our backs to the action.

DJing is social, why shut yourself out of the social space to save a few feet of floorspace?

...And looking into the room is pretty much mandatory to us spinning video on our TVs...

I just tried moving my setup against the wall and I got a miraculous 2x5' strip of floor space relocated from behind my DJ setup where I would stand DJing to a 2x5' strip of floor space in front of my DJing setup where I would then stand DJing. Unless you're living in a studio apartment or a dorm room it doesn't matter.

Next he's going to try to convince everyone who keeps their bed centered in their room that unless they keep it in the corner it is horribly inefficient and they should just consider killing themselves if they think it makes any sense.
