Believe me, I can spot mp3 artifacts from a mile away. Still on occasions when I find this super rare afro-funk jam that someone has graciously ripped from their old vinyl, it's nice to know just HOW shitty it really is. Could it fly on a big sound system or not, cause bad sounds worst when played super-loud.

As far as buying, I do & buy lossless ($10 a week budget is a surprising amount of tracks by the end of the year). But I have also bought lossless & thought I could detect artifacts, WTF: dodgy prod? upscaled mp3? traktor Keylock? Now I'll know...

    cheers,

    …or you could buy wavs.

Seriously…the worst thing I've done in that regard was accidentally teaching myself to hear the difference. Thank got my car stereo sucks more than iTunes quality files, otherwise I'd go nuts re-buying actual media or wav files for my listening library.

Haha! I know that feeling. I often catch myself getting annoyed about the quality of a sound system or a low quality compression when I'm supposed to be enjoying some music ;P

Is there any other way M? No, a 320kbps mp3 does NOT sound like a WAV!

Not maybe the BEST thing you have done M - a discerning ear is an asset.

Btw, am I the only one who is seriously annoyed by producers, who often make their tracks sound like badly encoded MP3s? (Armand van Helden, I'm looking at you.)

No, you're not, and AvH is not the only one. IMHO the best productions right now are coming out of Digweed's Bedrock label.

Good article, thanks! I probably won't be wasting that much time on finding out if it's a fake or not though. So far I've been doing far by hear
