Is "simple" mixing bad?

Simple mixing is preferable to me over an overload of FX/scratching/juggling/trick mixing, especially as the people that overuse that stuff are often not that skilled in the first place and it just sounds shit.

It's all about finding the right balance though. If you can do that, then it's better than just doing simple mixing all the time IMO. It's like adding seasoning to a meal. Don't use any and it's bland. Put too much on and you ruin it.

My play on this is, if you are going to do FX or other transition "tricks", then they should sound "simple" to the ear. In other words, if you are going to do something out of the ordinary, it should be so good and professionally well done, nobody really knows it is you "bending" the music to your own will. All the people hear is something different that sounds great and adds to the energy of the mix.

Edit/ and this is what takes time to learn to become a really good DJ. I still have a lot of learning to do myself.

yup thats how I see if effects sound good, when they become extremely noticeable it usually isnt a good thing
