3-channel little brother to the xone:62, you mean. It predates the 42 by almost a decade.

You are correct. I should have stated the 22 was the little bro to the 42.
32 is a nice little 3 channel mixer but what in the world was the thought behind the gain knobs on the back panel (???!!!!!).

I use a Behringer DDM4000, and I'll use 2 channels for my CDJs. The third channel is if there's a second DJ. I plug an RCA to 1/8in. jack into the fourth channel, and then leave it open at house parties so people can plug their iPod/iPhone into it with stuff they wanna hear. This lets people get their requests played and I don't have to put up with their drunken nagging

It kinda predates software with auto-gain, so idk. Today with SSL, traktor, and ableton all being able to control that without much fuss, it's not a big deal, but hen it came out it would have been a pain. I'm sure somebody wanted it to fir a certain form factor and usability bit the dust compared to being able to fit it in a battle moxer's road case or some such nonsense.

@photojojo: 4th deck as a preview player, that's genus, I've had that deck running empty for some time now

@fullenglishpint: yeah, I've modded my Numark200 and removed phono preamp stage, to be able to switch between sets of gear.

@mostapha: that Vestax is my dream, none make them like that anymore, just look at the full 3-ban EQ for the monitors, droooolll...

I mix DnB-style music. With liquid tracks I use up to three decks. With regular/party tracks, which are more sonically rich, I usually find two channels enough (especially when I'm on the party rush).
Although not fully used, versatility of a four-deck mixer is incredibly useful in a small-ish home-dj-studio-thing.

Possible culprit of deck un-usage: I too haven't found a controller setup which would allow me to utilise all four decks fully. Just recently I've re-worked my keyboard setup (yes I actively use keyboard and I always will) to incorporate a almost-full control of all four decks.
That said, I can't wait for those new Behringer toys, although, they seem a bit on the large side. (thanks @nem0nic)
Many photons have died to bring you this information.
