I'm sure it would cost more than $15 to put one of those in there. The pcb would become a lot smaller, platter would t need to interact with the hardware at all, internal software. Surely there's more to it than simply wacking a cd player inside???

I assure you it costs between 30-45 USD for the entire DVD rom. Including PCB's with controlling chips, firmware, buffer, all the other stuff involved.

cheap laser DVD pickup don't last with vibration, as simple as that. Replacement Laser Assy' for a CDJ is round 115$-125$ COST.

The whole unit problem costs less than $500 to build at cost then

Thats probably about right. If you add the random other things like shipping cost, etc. I'd say its close to there, cause they probably sell it to retailers at about 1200-1500. So then retailers can mark up.

mark up on Pioneer products is pretty lame. 10-15% mark up in most store. It used to be 30-40%

    It's actually a DVD-ROM drive in the 2000s.

An upgrade to BD-ROM wouldn't make much sense as anyone is likely to use USB-keys for higher capacities.

In the long run they'll ditch the optical drive but it still too early for that.
