The difference between asking on a forum and asking in a record shop are pretty obvious - in a record shop the bloke (or bloke-ette) behind the counter is getting paid for their advice, and also they have a limited stock from which to recommend which makes it a lot easier.

I don't see what's so wrong about finding a shop (online or off) that you like and trawling the old fashioned way, you'll end up learning more about the music and also you'll end up with a collection that is yours, not a load of stuff that lots of other people on the internet are playing.

I think it really comes down to how they ask. I agree, "I need a set list for a house party im playing tomorrow night and i just got my first controller" is not a good way to go about it, thats being a human ipod. But if you find something you like that is new, why not ask a forum of fellow dj's with experience on what kind of genre and some pointers. We're here to help and share information after all....

Asking for the genre and some initial hints regarding artists/labels is definetely ok. The point where it gets annoying for me comes when I get the feeling that people are just too lazy to put in some effort on their own.

And results in DJs playing the same sets such as top-20 Beatport ones...
