In my opinion if you want to do a controllerism course, while yes you need to pick a controller to use in the classroom, the most important aspect should be arround the mappingin ableton, TSP, and Serato, and how different control elemtents are able to be used, ie buttons, jogs, encoders, touch strips etc, and also focus on the importance of using trigger (digital) controls in conjunction with expressive (generally analog).
Focusing on teaching someone to use a premapped VCI is a waste of time, most people can figure out the basics of mixing sans the need to beatmatch through trial and error, teaching them how to get creative with the mapping is something which people will benefit massivley from in a face to face enviroment.
I think a collection of cheaper more purpose built type controllers (apc40, launch pad, dicers, Midifighter, x1's) would be more benifically to a course on controllerism than buy pricey controllers which pretty much just emulate the trad work flow with some extra looping and fx
