i dont own cdjs (or turntables) and a mixer.
but i can still beatmatch.
borrow a set from a friend and learn. cdjs arent hard to use at all. they all have the same basic system.

I find that in pretty much everything i get involved in, i'm always ahead of my time. Webdesign, photography, Djing etc etc."They are more scared of change than a goldfish in a wishing well" -Timmy Woo, 2009.
A year or so later after I have given up and got bored with it, people start to become receptive to the change. Change takes time unfortunately.
I'm stupidly adaptive, I've played other people's vinyl at clubs, I've learnt in real time in a club how to use cdjs. Ive even done a set on my old mobile phone to save a party when the dj didn't turn up.
I guess the point im making is that i have the raw skills, but also the forsight to see what the next techno-logical step is.
In every art form, djing, producing, photography, webdesign etc etc. technology has opened it up to a whole host of pretenders. The number of people i know, that buy a camera, do a 'photoshoot' and call them selves a photographer.
You just have to be better than everyone else and work harder than everyone else.
My photography portfolio if anyone is interested.

no, what we are saying is that if you want to start djing seriously, sometimes you have to comprise on your gear so that you can actually get the gig. after you have shown people that you can actually dj, not just press the play button, you can start doing things a bit more the way you want.
I dont press a play button though, everything i do is manual, i only have a laptop so i dont have to tug around hundereds of vinyls.

there are pretenders in every form of dj'ing
and i would rather watch someone rock out on a midi controller/keyboard making it intresting
then watching someone like pauly d "scratch" over a pitbull record
When I going into the club I'm looking for the girls not DJ...
and If the promoter said that....The club owner should have a bad problems not DJ...
I'd bet they wouldn't turn away Dubfire if he just turned up with his controllers.
I'm just getting back into DJ'ing, mainly as a hobby, I used to DJ in the early-mid 90's with vinyl only. Now, I'm getting back into the technology elements. The stuff you can do with Trakor is way more expansive that ever before, just the looping control alone makes what a DJ can do so flexible.
It should be about the music, anyone can use the software to beatmatch, but it takes skill to put two hours together and make the punters happy.
I do still have a deck setup, just so I can pull out my classics when I feel like it.....
I'm sorry but I really must be missing what this magic performance aspect of turntable mixing (CDJ's or 1210's etc) is that promoters have a inherrent need to see? Can anyone explain it to me?
When I go and watch DJ's who still play with a collection on tunes (either on CD or vinyl) then 15-20% of their time is sat looking at/ searching through there tunes, I'll freely admit that laptop dj's do the same when looking at their laptops but all I'm saying is the same is true of both. Anyway I don't remember the last time I went to a club that had an exposed area so you could see all of what the DJ is doing, majority of them you see shoulders up and that's it?
At least when using traktor I can get alot of my set up done at home (cue points, gridding etc) then when it actually comes to performance I can rock out and dance around (which I always do) and get the crowd going instead of getting the beatmatching down, then tweaking then finally having a look at the crowd etc. Also having the ability to play around and live re-mixing, beat juglling with Traktor creates more interaction with the crowd than just straight record to record mixing.
I'm not dissing traditional set ups but don't understand why promoters are so scared and you hear arguments/ reasons they give like they don't like to see people staring at their laptops. I'm a bit lost?
