For every major step Mixx takes forward, Serato has taken two and NI have taken three.

The Serato and Traktor killer is going to come in the form of the electric guitar when EDM goes back into obsolescence, everybody hates DJs again, and the teenage electro DJ crowd have moved on to something else.

I wish someone came up with a linux based piece of software like traktor or serato. I'd switch in a heartbeat.

Mixxx's open source development is nowhere nearly as organized and goal-focused as a any commercial product with a dedicated team of developers working in close cooperation, so I'm going to have to disagree with you there. If having more developers and testers mattered, they'd be giving the major software developers a run for their money right now. "Right now" as in not in "February".

Anywa,y this argument is going to be about a difference in indoctrination so it will just drag from here. My main point is that the only thing NI and Serato have to worry about it people getting over wanting to "get into DJing".

Comparing the development/release cycle between the likes of Traktor/Serato and mixxx is a tad apple and oranges. Sure the progress of mixxx may appear faster than x program when every day/week/month a point release is issued. But without assessing the content of each release the point is kinda...pointless. Overall it is good to get regular fixes and/or new features/bugs for a community project--one for fostering interest and dynamism to a particular goal, another for making a useful product. However, extrapolating from that process the destruction of another is beyond the verge of hyperbole.

Karlos, I simply do not believe there's anything special about DJ software. You seem to disagree. Can you explain what makes it so unique?

There is ALOT of audio software employed by pros which is open source: Audacity, Icecast, FLAC, Csound, Pd, Ardour, Rosengarden, etc. And then there's software which isn't open-source but freeware: TouchOSC, Rapid Evolution, most software from Togu Audio Line (TAL), Liine Kapture, some software from Aurex, Renoise, etc.

Traktor was first released in 2000. Ten years later, it's starting to become a mature product. Some will buy future upgrades only to obtain support for the latest hardware or to get minor improvements such as a more user-friendly GUI. Basically, I predict that we'll soon reach a point where it will be pretty hard for NI and Serato to deliver major innovations. Just as Microsoft has a fairly hard time nowadays to improve Word.

And then, it's just the question if the open-source alternative can provide the check box features and can support enough hardware. Since the demand side of the market for DJ software is fairly dynamic, switching-cost related issues aren't as prevalent as they are, say, in the market for office software. So if the open-source alternative is good enough, many will opt for it instead for commercial software.

people keep saying that Mixxx has "come on leaps and bounds" but it hasnt leaped enough.
It's true, I've seen better open-source projects than Mixxx. But it seems to me it's finally gaining a bit of momentum.

In 5 years time, if Mixxx is as widely used as Serato or Traktor ill eat my laptop. Its that simple.

I think you should plan a trip to the dentist soon, I'm sure they'll have to do some pretty brutal surgery after that one.

I think that the video feature is just getting as much attention as it is just because it's the hot new feature. I personally don't see it as being that vital. Only the big hit songs will ever come with a video and most visuals I've seen done at parties are done by a dedicated VJ.

At the moment we are making strides with beats; gridding, autosync, quantization and beat loops. Pretty soon we should have feature parity in that respect with Traktor, and even excel them in some respects.

I'd love to say the same with FX, but alas I cannot.

You'll still have to wait... but definetely not five years. So get the chompers ready

Well it's actually 4 years 11 months now. And in last months DJTT survey... it doesn't even register in last months survey. The only thing needing chomping at the moment is market share

Ubuntu is more user friendly than Windows for general users. It has more cli commands but that does not make a differnce to most users
