hey all, sorry to be a noob about asking this question, but does the 3m, 2x3d's need an external sound card as well to run properly? Im just researching this setup but cant find any info on it regarding the hardware and software setup.

Yes. They are strictly MIDI controllers.

If you buy the 3 pack (http://www.enterthesystem.com/system3/scsystem3pack/) instead of separate components, it comes with a cable that splits your laptop's audio output into a mono monitor jack and a mono RCA output for your mains audio. So if you want to give digital DJing a try without spending even more on an audio interface, you might give that a shot to start.
