Here in the North Bay I've just started seeing dubstep in the last few months. It does appear to be blowing up, though. A couple of my buddies who used to spin electro are doing nothing but dubstep now and have shows all over NorCal every weekend. I think it's all the hippies around here.

Dubstep = 140 BPM (can vary a little), Snare on third beat.

Thats pretty much it, which is why every producer in dubstep sounds different, even listening to old skream productions compared with his newer stuff sounds massively different and thats because dubstep hasn't been defined yet!

Their are so many varying forms of dubstep, from early darker stuff (burial) to the more 'up to date' - If you will - 'filthy' (Doctor P/Flux Pavillion etc) takes on this simple track format...

I have noticed Rusko and Skream have started taking dubstep back to its roots by changing snare patterns so they land on the 2 and 4 and often have ghost notes around the bar to create a more 'garage' feel, yet still I would call this dubstep due to the BPM used... Check out Skreams 'summer dreams', great chill track

So much like the genre, I wont conclude this post...

    Dubstep =

a house beat sped up to 140, remove kicks 2, 3, 4 or shift them to a syncopated pattern, shift snare one to beat 3, remove snare two, Record yourself saying "Wa Wa Wa Wobble" and use that as a carrier to gate a lo frequency sine wave, feed your vocal back into the master, add some hydrolic sounds (Transformer samples work great), load massive and detune the three Oscillators (use different waveforms) into three octave (0, -12, -24 semitones), put an LFO onto the Filter Cut off and automate the shit out of the speed.
    Arrange into a club banger.
