Default Legit Controllerist and Live PA

I think that the term legit controllerlist will have the same history like the term Live PA...
People will become using the term everywere and when the crowd understand what it stands for, DJ's will become to "fake" the controllerist action just to get paid and get the glory like a real controllerist.

What do you people think of this? We have had this conversation about the abuse use of Live PA term on the scene but not in this context, comparing with the term controllerist. Do you think that will happen like the Live PA, become a industry standard term for highly priced DJs?

awww.... you think I'm skilling? I <3 you too

I understand what you're saying, though. I think this discussion is more geared toward the club style of DJing in general, as most of us are.

I agree with you, I just don't want this debate to become "Let's do something cool to prove we don't suck". I don't think that actually helps any of us in the end

No it definately doesnt help us at all. That would only create resentment. We need to come together and truly figure out how to really become accepted as peers. Im not satisfied with a simple "just say fuck em" mentality. As controllerists we represent the cutting edge, a new way forward in the realm of DJing. Im having a hard time presenting controllerism as a legit method of DJing. All the "headliners" in the rave scene dont spin digitally. Serato is as far as they will go. We have a couple of guys that are completely digital but they do live PA they dont spin. When they do its cdj/tt. So how the hell am I supposed to compete with such a negative mindset? Its semi flattering since they see me as a threat, but threats dont get booked. Not to say Im having issues getting booked per say (getting at least 3 bookings per month) but the drama I put up with consistently is annoying.

I want to throw a party where only controllerists are allowed to spin and invite people to check us out and perhaps spread awareness in the tristate area.

Pure digital DJs shouldn't have to prove anything. Getting scoffed at by close minded ego sensitive DJs is part of the territory and they should be ignored. Just play, don't try to prove anything or start a battle between digital and traditional DJing, just do your thing and let the scene evolve naturally. Starting conflicts and going into gigs with a position that you have to prove you are a worthy DJ capable of crazy tricks regular DJs can't do is pointless. Just let the fools with big egos that think being able to play two records at the same speed is a huge professional accomplishment go; in time they will be phased out or have to learn to adapt. The key is not to start a war or even a divide between different approaches. I know some of them want one, fine, don't acknowledge it.

Go out and DJ with whatever setup you like to use and act normal about it, eventually everything will find its place. Accept for other DJs and people in the music field, no one cares, and the best way to make digital DJing more accepted as a standard is to act like it is a normal standard.

Just keep fighting for them. Unfortunately the first wave kinda gets the most shit in the revolution.

Interesting discussion here. Some very good points so far.

Although I don't consider myself a DJ since its just for fun, I have spoken to a local DJ who makes it seem like controller-ism isn't of any worth. He brought up things like how laptops always fail and how this particular CDJ is soooo much better. Which could make it seem that I'm a noob for having a midi controller and not what other people are using.

Now, I'm not saying that equipment can't fail but what I find a little annoying is the fact that people will tend to dwell on things like that and not embrace or even acknowledge advances in tech. that are being made.

Perhaps those statements were meant as a form of discouragement for a newcomer...

believe in yourself and the people who are doing the same things as the more we segregate ourselves from traditionalist, things wouldnt be solved in fact it will widen the gap even further. yes they might and will say things to discourage what we are doing but we have to not be discourage by it. i guess to educate is a better way despite the fact that we are getting doubts and crap from traditionalist. giving back crap to them is the same as being them.

    Default "Traktor Pffft..!"

[i posted this over at NI today then this thread popped up so i though is unburden myself on the good peeps of DJTTs]

Im not a violent man im really not but i was close to smashing a CDJ into a guys head last nite (in fact 2 of them).

One of them was just a really young idiot off his head on fizz-bombs and asking for really generic dub and ska but the other guy Grrrrr.

Last nite i road tested my new MBP . Small gig 250 people but always sweaty and jumping, proper little pressure cooker gig.

Being the paranoid, worrier i am and despite never having a live crash with Traktor i figured id bring my current MBP as a backup.

The Setup was DJM800, 2 CDJ 1000mk3s. Always have cds in for backup and i have few scratch tracks on cd that i like to use (i wasnt using DVS at this gig).
Macbook Pro using 4 decks (with a Firebox soundcard) VCI 100
Macbook Pro 2 using 4 decks (with Audio 2) Faderfox DX2

As the nite progressed the new MBP was performing perfectly and quite a few Coronas had been drunk so i was using the Mac and scratching (badly) with the cdjs and trying to get clever beatmatchimg the Laptop and the cdjs, its good to keep yourself from getting rusty.

So im p*ssing around using 2 laptop and 2 cdjs mixing and matching the lot of them , not to be clever but for fun. The club manager was there and he was getting involved playing cds and we were just having a lot of fun with all this technology (quite a lot of technology you will agree).

And then the tosser arrived. He just stood at the side of the box , clearly didnt look at what i was doing or all the kit i was using and just went "Traktor pfft..!" and walked away shaking his head.
My headphones flew off and i was after the tool luckily the club manger grabbed me and was laughing at my little girls rant.

So... i guess im saying that no matter how long you have been DJIng or no matter how long you have used digital or even if you have good rep in your city and you have heard all the Traktor/Serato haters rubbish before it can still catch you by surprise and turn you into a raging lunatic.

Phew... just wanted to get that out. I feel better now.

The first wave also gets to dish out the most shit after the revolution, though. OUR TIME WILL COME.
