Wow some serious hatred going on over on the serato forums. They seem to have forgotten what really matters; the final mix that is. If it sounds good to the average non-DJ'ing Joe on the dancefloor who the F cares about how it was made.

Then again I'm one of those microwave DJ's that is destroying the art of DJ'ing with my nooby skills GRRRR HATE HATE HATE...

Wait sorry I'm starting to sound like yet another 'insignificant-in-the-grand-scheme-of-things-internet-hate-monger' who has become so blinded by jealousy, anger, regret and fear that I've forgetten what mixing is REALLY about.

I had to close that page after 5 minutes because I could feel the urge to join in on their futile debate.

    BLEH.

I read some of the other posts and several of the regulars seem to readily admit and enjoy the fact that they're assholes. I'm sure glad I picked traktor.

That post of your "needed" to be said no matter what reply it got. The only thing they could come up with as more rubbish which shows that your post hit a nerve.

Has anyone noticed that most of the members and ALL the Mods are staying well clear of the thread... Why? Because as i pointed out in the thread, they are all embarrassed about what their members are saying.

We all like a little bitch. All of us here have hated on Rana and Pauly D etc but its pretty much because these people are self promoting whores with no talent.
This is what gets to me the most. These Serato members cannot see that by hating on Ean they are hating on a skilled DJ. They arent even slagging off his performance, its personal and its pathetic.

I know for a fact that if a similar thread about 'anyone' had been started at NI it would have been shut down for taking a wrong turn. Likewise the Mods here would have done the same thing.

I dont care that those guys dont like what Ean does, its the unwillingness to accept that DJs dont just spin 2 records to be accepted as DJs but mostly the personal nature of the attacks.

Far too much bravado and hip-hop heroics on that forum... and as someonw who has been involved in the hip-hop community for a long time i say it with some knowledge. HipHop can breed some proper fucking idiots with some idiotic hard-assed attitude.

I joined that forum 6 years ago (under a different name) on the same day i joined the NI forum to decide which DVS to go with and it was exactly the same.

Im just glad that in a year or so there will be more SSL/Serato users on there using Dicers and The Bridge and Itch2.0 and VCI300s as well as DVS that those people will be in such a minority that they will wither and die.

Its time for Serato to clean that forum up if they want to attract the numbers of new users that Traktor or Abelton are getting.

Just my 2 eggs & bacon.

I said that to illustrate how DJs play to their target audience. Unless I'm wrong, Q doesn't play out using Traktor or SSL.

Credit where credit is due. Ean rocks a great set there, and I'm quite his audience loves every single button pushing second of it.

You know what the biggest irony is? The "purists" were the hated ones just a few years ago. And I suspect that the iPad DJs with their custom touch interfaces will come in for similar flack from preceding technology users.

And more food for thought - whether DVS users like it or not, when using a laptop, the turntable is just a controller just like any other type. Even the vinyl is called control vinyl. I could understand a real vinyl DJ chucking a hissy fit about Ean's set, but swap a MIDI fighter for a turntable with control vinyl, and there's very little difference.

Just sitting here chilling in an airport (well actually I'm stuck due to a cancelled flight...) and listening to the mp3 of Ean's set. If you posted this on soundcloud without telling anybody HOW you mixed it, you would get kudos for such a wicked and divers set. But because you can SEE what he's doing (which is of course the point..) he gets slagged.

I beta test for Itch and there are some great people over there on the forum. But the general forums there are a lions den. I would always recommend Itch or SSL users surf the Serato forums when they have an issue or are looking for tips, just stay away from the people who are only looking for a fight.

So uh, are DJs like that IRL? I still kind of picture the average club DJ as the kind that hates on digital n' stuff. What are they actually like?

We see this sort of thing all the time, but I don't think that people truly understand or appreciate what is going on here. Reputation means everything in the DJ world. Once you have the reputation nothing else really matters. Just look at Pioneer. They have the reputation as being the industry standard. There are other mixers out there many believe are superior options, but it doesn't matter. You still see the DJM-800 in almost every serious club setup because the reputation still wins out. Many of the big name DJs aren't really all that good anymore, but continue on because of their reputation.

Of course you have to work to get that sort of reputation. Serato got it's reputation by being stable, having good timecode control, and not charging you for updates. It had it where it counted, and people fell in love with the company/product as a result. The issue that we see today is that Traktor completely obliterated all of that with Traktor Scratch Pro. The stability issues were fixed, the timecode was in some ways superior, and the MIDI mapping abilities opened up whole new worlds of creativity. Almost every technical/feature reason to pick Serato over Traktor was destroyed.

At some point the new features and innovation started to win out over long standing reputation. EDM artists have been switching to Traktor in droves. This paradigm shift in the industry strikes at the very heart of the Serato fanbase. Many of them chose it for it's reputation as the best, but now that assumption is under attack.

Hence why we see the reaction that we do. They are basically saying "we're more reputable because we use serato/vinyl", when nobody cares anymore. Establishing a good reputation is important, but trying to establish it by pointing out what hardware you use simply doesn't work on us anymore.

It's all about perception and how that effects your reputation. I want to be viewed as someone that can make whatever sound he wants come out of the speakers. So when I use effects I'm a little sloppy at first, just so that the audience realizes I'm using them. The result is that my audience thinks I'm doing really sick crazy stuff when I'm really not. You have to ask what kind of perception people will be left with when you basically come out and say "I'm a better DJ than others because of what software I use". Even if you agree with them it's hard to not have that nasty elitist aftertaste in your mouth.

My take on the whole thing:

I'm an unlikely person to defend controllerism, and the "music" that comes from it. I personally can't make it past a minute or so in any Ean performances. It's not my bag at all. I do/listen to deep house and tech house and classic hard tech/trance. The vast majority of it is about long transitions and long tracks. Not much EFX if any.

Why am I here? Because I love the community here, I love the vibe, I personally dabble with midi stuff to do "traditional" 2-deck mixing, and I love seeing all the crazy geeky stuff that gets built and modded. This place is great.

The folks on the Serato forum are, and always have been, for the majority, a bunch of egotistical and obnoxious drama queens/e-thugs. There's no way I'd ever do more than lurk there.

Keep up the great vibe, and props to Ean for staying classy whilst getting ripped on by all the wanksters on Serato forums.
