Dude I don't think either of those parties qualify as musicians ;P

    That's exactly my point. Exactly.

It has more to do with the execution and the vision of the artist than it does with the tools at hand.

Yeah I agree. My point was that the monome loop player application could be replicated in ableton and it's just a slightly more complex form of DJing. Then blackened started trying to change my mind about my personal definition of what DJing is.

I don't consider DJing the same as playing a monome, sorry, but that is my opinion. And I agree with you too Mostapha.

That application is pretty much the twitches slicer. Or a sliced up loop in ableton with each part linked using the follow on thing. Or a loop and cue points in traktor. I don't see what makes it so special.

The fact that it is mainly a production tool and not a DJ tool... The twitch is blending the lines between production and DJing (monome came first). A loop and cue points is nothing like the monome.

Ableton is mainly a production tool and not a DJ tool. What now? :P

Either way why does the tool matter, it's what you do with it.

And that is why those who "DJ" with ableton are performing live, or "live PA". This thread is about the discussion of this particular style of DJing or performing rather than spinning with 2 decks, or from track A ---> B!

The reason ableton and a monome are more similar to djing then traditional definition of performance can be best summed up by this : with a traditional instrument performance you can pick up any guitar or whatever and be able to perform. You can't do that with ableton. Have you ever put together a ableton live set? You can't just pick up any laptop and start doing a performance on par with daedelus or flying lotus because it requires pre recorded material. Stating that theres a difference between the two in no means diminishes the value of the sets

Okay so should I have just opened up this thread inquiring on people's different styles of DJing? No, I had a focus, what other way am I going to distinguish between 2/4 deck mixing and using other means of performing such as maschine, ableton or a combination of other hardware and software? Geeze...
