I want to get paid as a DJ. Does that mean I don't have the passion? After all the money and time I spend, which I think is definitely worth something, I should expect compensation for the service I provide. I could never expect the artist that is providing the works that I create my trade with to not be compensated.
I don't think anyone deserves to be paid millions and millions of dollars for writing a good trance song, but who is? I also don't think that PVD, AVB, Tiesto, or any of these big name DJs should be paid $40,000 a gig. But there is a big difference between profit, making a living, dedicating ones life to their passions, and greed. If profit is greed then I am greedy for working a job that pays me enough to be able to do the things I enjoy.
I think, what it comes down to for TPB is this: intent. If I build a contraption that can break car and home alarms at the push of a button, but has the nasty side effect of being a wireless memory card. My intent was not to build a wireless memory card, but I have. If I sell this unit, and someone gets caught stealing a car with it I (and they) will go to jail, regardless of the positive application of the product.
The Pirate's Bay, in my mind, was created to circumvent copyright laws. If it wasn't they would have worked to stop it from happening. Just like if I had built my product to be a wireless memory card that had the unfortunate side effect of scrambling home alarm systems, I would work to have that bug turned off. *shrug* And then I would not go to jail.
