I successfully upgraded my firmware last night for the first time. I was using a USB-Serial cable so it didn’t “just work” but the troubleshooting was very minor as I found all the information I needed on the FAQ.
In case it helps anyone else, here’s the story. Bought the cable from BestBuy, it was made by their proprietary brand Dynex. Drivers didn’t automatically install so I had to do a google search which brought me right to the download page on Dynex’s website. Had to restart after installing drivers. Attempted to write firmware but it failed saying “kernel could not be downloaded” or something to that effect. Looked at the FAQ and found the relevant entry. Used the advancedsetup.exe and applied the delay fix. (1000 worked for me). Tried to write firmware, this time failed saying it couldn’t find the boot device or something similar. I tried changing the COM port the cable was using, but again no joy. After a moment of head scratching I decided to restart my computer as generally, old school serial technology is not hot pluggable. Tried to write firmware after restart and voila, brand new firmware on my VCI-100
That story seems pretty drawn out typed but in all honestly, the whole process took 25 mins from start to finish, including troubleshooting. My advice for anyone having problems, when in doubt, before you give up, RESTART! Sometimes that’s all it takes.
