You could run 3 usb 2.0 midis= devices of on Air and bring music on from an external ssd over the thunderbolt port.
    Nice product there, but pricey.

I'd rather just be able to carry one thing around (the laptop) rather than the added cables, external HD and hub.

The only weak point of the current Air is the 4G ram limit, which for Trakotr & general use is completely enough, but is insufficient if you need to run Windows in Parallels/VMWare.

Besides the virtualization, the current Air is great machine for DJing and general laptop use.
4gb "insufficient" to run Windows? You sure about that?

I only have the Crucial 2gb upgrade on my current white MacBook and it runs Parallels/Windows flawlessly, but XP....I don't think it could handle 7. 4gb will be fine.

I ended up getting a macbook pro 17" 750 gig, 2.2 i7 with a 750 gig harddrive. I was considering the air, or a 15" but when I saw that the 17" had 3 usb ports I was sold. It came with 4 gig, but I bought OWC ram and upgraded it to 8gb. I'm waiting for SSDs to reduce in price so I can get a 512. I'm already at about 200gb so I need more space.

It's insufficient. Os x is geedy and once i start the vm, the swapping begins. I'm running Visiual Studio & Ms project & visio in the Vm - i need the Win VM to have 3-4g at least. 4G physical is just not enough for me - you cant afford to allocate more than 1g to the vm, which is simply mot enough.

Perhaps 6g would do fine, but the double channel RAM architecture is supposed to boost performance, so same mem banks are the optimal choice, hance, 8g

...and that's where setting your own priorities comes in. Do you want extra portability or extra features? This is where I chose for portability and bought a MBAir. I take it to university every single day for study purposes and I rarely gig out. I did not regret my decision one single time.
If you really, really crave for those extra inputs, take the loss on portability and buy a big MBPro. Which will, in the end, may cost even more than a MBAir and hub together.

I had a look at the Airs in the Apple shop last week and whilst they are undoubtably smaller and lighter just how much are people really gonna notice it .

Are people really gonna buy these things cus of a few kilograms and inches or whatever the difference is ?

MBPs are getting lighter. The feel of an MBP is sturdy and i like that. Im totally opposed to Apple making them any lighter or thinner.
I cant see anyone who gigs regularly being fussed about this weight shaving. What you want is reliability and ruggedness and the "smaller, thinner, lighter" obsession must come at a price eventually.

I dunno, im not convinced by the Airs at all but maybe thats cus i gig 3 or 4 nites a week and play lots of different kinds of gigs and my gear is thrown in cars and taxis etc.

btw- i am actually just spouting onto the page cus im bored !!!

Word is the next generation MBP's are going to be similar in design to the Air. Thin and light yet stil powerful.
I have a 15" MBP with a 2.53 core i5 and 8gb of ram. It's pretty good even though i can use more but if an air comes out with similar specs and a pretty large SSD i'm on it right away.

You are correct about it for dj'ing but do you think apple has ever even thought about how their macbooks work for dj'ing? We make up what like .2% of the market share haha.

Yeah I agree, at the moment I think macbook pros are the perfect size. I dont see why apple would make them any smaller rather than just updating the airs.

Apart from the CD drive (which most people use minimally anyhow) .. what reason would they not look at making them as light and thin ?

Of course they could do Air's in a ruggedized lightweight casing for pro use :P

not much real need for having a cd drive these days i guess apart from ripping your own cd's - tho i never buy cd's any more anyway - not since my mass rip+chuckout of a few years ago. esp as u can always burn an iso to a bootable usb stick.

the mbp i7 just seems more bang for my buck to me - so think that's what i'm going for - the 13 inch mbp i7 with 500gb hdd and 4gb of ram. the upgrade from i5 to i7 seems worth it maybe? i don't plan on replacing this for a long time if i can help it.
