Quick question that someone may be able to answer. I'm trying to find the cheapest way to build a controller that I am planning. originally I was going to do it with multiple different components but now I am thinking of 'retrofitting' an akai LPD8

Could I desolder the pots and use push button encoders or atleast solder higher quality pots? Also could I replace the LEDs for the buttons with RGBs? Im just starting to get into this and want to get some parts in house to start messing around....but don't want to completely waste a purchase

If the Leds are one color, you can't drive RGB's. You can however use different colors, but results may vary.

Thanks for the response....I think I found alternatives anyways thanks to ErikMinekus's spotting of parts. I stumbled on some sites that had a wide variety of parts that I was looking for.

What are you using as a brain for your retrofit? You can simulate RGB LEDs with a red, green and blue LED and a bit of programming. If you're ordering in bulk (say 10+ leds of each color) that might just work out cheaper than buying pre-built RGB LEDs.

Called it Frankenstein - was build out of first buttons and materials I have found in my workshop. This pic is taken about 3 years ago... It's based on gamepad and Rejoice HID to MIDI converter, I made it just for modifiers in Traktor so I could send different states to my primary controller. That was a test unit actually which I've updated with other case and arcade buttons later on.

Reminds me of my early starts. Same story, hideous box, few controls, cheesy paintjob (glittery purple).
The v2 of the unit almost went out in flames as it was high/low voltage(220V mains and 5V from LPT) combo built into an old cdrom case. I still have it somewhere, should follow-up with a image.
