Yeah, I participated, along with Karlos and some other DJTT cats once, (ONCE), in a controllerist/DVS purist discussion on the Serato forums. I will never do it again. What a waste of time. I actually have zero interest in visiting the new thread, I so don't give a rat's ass about the old tired flame war.
It's true that sync button makes it easier for a noob dj to shortchange their own musical education. But that doesn't mean they will. My hypothesis is that the ratio of suck djs to sick djs stays the same through the ages. The only difference now is that the affordability of technology mean there's more of us. But the desire to own your skills and stand out from the pack, and to LEARN about music remains strong in those who already had it. Sync or no sync, it makes no difference.
The more producing I do, and the more that those techniques work their way into my djing, via custom software hacks, weird controllers, and multiple programs running at once, the more these arguments seem like the dumbest tunnel vision tantrums to me. EXPLORE MUSIC. Rock The Crowd. The rest is garbage.
I'm just going to come out and say it: The only reasons I want a turntable around at all is to scratch a record, and to listen to an ACTUAL piece of vinyl, because of the way it sounds. I'm sorry, but DVS is just another controller, as far as I'm concerned.
I thought the Q-Bert/Ean Golden thing was great. Notice how Q-Bert talked about methods of making music and the sync button as a footnote to the creative process. Dude couldn't care less. Positive vibrations. I like how he said that everyone should have access to tools and be able to make music. That those who have the true skills and ambition will naturally rise to the top.
Hear bad music? Don't listen to it. Make something better.

ok ill give you a rundown at this point.
some guy over there named m bezzle seems to be 100% convinced that turtableists all over the world are being undercut and losing their residencies to kids with no experience because NI and Virtual DJ put a sync button in their software.
and yes, im being completely serious.
im sure him being a completely abrasive asshole had nothing to do with it whatsoever.

(i need his approval because he told me to stop last time)
Hmmm. The key word here, to me, is "turntablists". If we're actually talking about turntablists, then his assumption is patently false. Turntablists by definition, work the turntables like a musical instrument. They must be very skilled, and the sound is one of a kind. They are definitely NOT being undercut, because what they do (if someone wants to pay for it) cannot be faked.
But if we are really talking about plain old djing (which I have the feeling we are), then yeah - maybe undercutting is the case. But consider this: If a dj bases his/her entire reputation/marketability on how well they can beatmatch two rotating disks, and that is what's being threatened here, maybe they should get undercut. True talent and creativity speaks for itself. There's got to be more to the performer than beatmatching skills, otherwise they should expect to get swept under the rug.
I kinda feel like the only people to blame are owners, bookers, promoters, etc. The issue the Serato guys really have - if I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt - isn't sync, it's a lack of the talent and skill developed from hard work. That's not a technology problem, or a controllerist problem. That's a problem with music consumers not caring enough about high quality djs.
So a bunch of noobs will play for less. So what? If the noob sucks, get mad at the club owner for booking a sh*tty act. Help the club owner develop better taste. On the other hand, if the noob is blowing the roof off, should the DVS dj be mad because the club owner got a great act for a low price? Hell no, it's an f'in market economy! Get mad at the noob (who's blowing the roof off) for having a sync button on his machine? How ridiculous.
The important thing is to foster a culture of exceptional music. If we're talking about losing Top40 gigs to kids with sync, I say who cares? If no one can differentiate the "OG been vynil 4 lyfe since I wuz in dypers" from the noob with his brand new iMixxxIt4000, then OG better work on some new skills. If you are talented, trust me, you'll have gigs.

lol when you hear positive responses in recent interviews regarding future dj technologies such as Traktor and Controllers from legendary turntablists like Z-Trip, Q-Bert and Coldcut - the opinions of some armchair bigots on the serato forums doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot.
