DirectMusicService.com has the most thorough selection of throwback stuff I've found. Lots of long/short/intro edit options on many of the tracks as well. At $60/month it's a bit pricey but you could sign up for a single month of unlimited downloads and grab everything you need.

Beatjunkies is solid too, especially if you're looking for more straight up hip hop or older funk/disco/boogie gems.

Sometimes you gotta get inventive. I just found a whole bunch of unmixed compilation CDs in the bargain bin of a pawn shop for 10p each. Only one of them didn't read.

    Pools:

    - General throwbacks going as far back as the 50s in every genre: Direct Music Service - http://www.directmusicservice.com/. Warning: most of their tracks have been edited in some way... usually released as a redrum or 'short edit,' ie, 2.5 minutes long.

    - Pop/Rap/RnB throwbacks going to the early 90s with some 80s: Late Night Record Pool - http://www.latenightrecordpool.com/. Actually has the originals most of the time and often will have a 'mixshow edit' as well.

    Pay-per-track:

    - Google Play is hands down the best place to find compilations for cheap... For example: here are 100 hit tracks from the 90s: https://play.google.com/store/music/...qlw3di67lzjety $14... That's like 7¢/track.

    - iTunes or Amazon are of course also good options but iTunes bitrate and file format has raised concerns in the past as they use a lower bitrate VBR.

Primary Setup: Pioneer CDJs & Mixer.

You have to be careful with some of those compilations. Sometimes they'll not be the original artist, but re-recordings by a studio band. This is not specific to Google Play, they're all over the place.

They used to sell those compilations in bargain bins of supermarkets. Now they are on Amazon, Google Play et al. I nearly got caught out by them a couple of times, and it's annoying as hell when you're looking for something obscure and it's buried under hundreds of cover versions and karaoke versions. Crate digging is back...

Mixed compilations that have been separated into individual tracks can still catch you out, but many places seem to be phasing them out in favour of giving you the individual tracks, plus a continuous mix track separately.

If you find the right thing you can actually find some good deals for filling out a library.

I have a load of ones like this (bought on cd from amazon, but the cover art is the same)

    https://play.google.com/store/music/...z5g5igsw7y3jt4

Always original artists, and dead cheap for what you get. Just look for the plain white cover with the text on like that, there's loads of different ones out there, 70's 80's 90's 00's R&B motown etc.
