I booted up my ddjsx2 after it's been collecting dust for 3 months. I boot up rekordboxdj and now it is asking for a subscription. Is this new, or was I just lucky to have it working without paying for it for so long?

It was never free for the SX2 or similar, you just had the 30 day trial. Only DDJ-R controllers and the DJM-450 ship with Rekordbox.
