The problem with your analogy is that Nirvana were loved and feted by critics and fans alike.
They may have become successful, but their music was still well regarded before and after their success. Deadmau5 on the other hand has always been regarded as critically moribund by the cognoscenti.
Sorry to sound hippy-ish, but isn't the main ethos and quite an important rule of being a DJ/producer enjoying and appreciating music and respecting others no matter what music or equipment they use?
Most people here are controllists, and turntablist enthusiasts may call us lot pretend-DJ's or wannabee producers etc and I bet you'd have a pop at them to prove them wrong.
Everyone has different tastes and everyone has different equipment. I recently saw Faithless do a DJ set using an elaborate rig of MIDI controllers, Pioneer equipment etc with no vinyl in sight and they weren't that good in all honesty. Then, a friend of mine, Jamie Jones, used to play on two crappy budget vinyl decks with a 2 channel Numark mixer and it sounded awesome.
Point is, it doesn't matter on what equipment is used or what music they play, as long as they enjoy what they're doing and make people happy with their music. If you do that, and get a lucky break, you will become popular, whcih is what has happened to Deadmau5. If you get too serious and condemn other people for doing what they do, no matter how good or bad it is, I'm afraid you'll more than likely just be lingering in them local pubs and clubs til you hang your decks up.
In my DJ guide, one of the main rules has always been to appreciate and accept that other DJs and producers have different music tastes and different budgets for equipment and will result in everyone ultimately being 'different'. Accepting different things, whether good or bad in my personal opinion, is only second to actually enjoy all kinds of music.
That's my tuppence worth anyway.......
Ableton 9.7.5, Native Instruments Komplete Ultimate 11, MOTU 828 Mk2, Nektar Impact LX61+, Ableton Push, Native Instruments Kore 2, and a random selection of soft synths and sample libraries.
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit with Core i7 4960X Extreme Edition 12 core CPU, 64GB RAM, SanDisk Ultra Extreme SSDs and a GeForce GTX 970 G1 Gaming GPU.
Nice in theory, but that's akin to me digging through a mountain of poo, looking for that coveted kernel of corn, and you telling me to enjoy the poo while I do it.
I can tell with a certainty there were critics in that day that did not like Nirvana. I would also expect a fan to praise the band they follow, else they wouldn't be a fan. (edit: to be fair, there are most definitely fans that chastise those they follow when they stray too far from what set them apart from the rest)
I wasn't saying Deadmau5 was analogous to Nirvana; that's a stretch. I'm saying whether people like the band, some artists come along and force the music in a new direction. The mere fact that Joel is a walking billboard with his oh-so marketable mask, and judging by the legion of fans who never knew EDM before they heard his music, indicate that times are always changing and there is new blood in this stream of music.

I prefer a live cat to a Deadmau5.
