    Default Recommended effect mapping questions

Hi djtechtools... you guys are awesome! (been lurking here for a while...)

I finally went out and purchased a pair of controllers. It was actually between the S4 and a pair of Reloop Contours. I went with the Contours for a number of reasons.

Just wanted to say first that the hardware is absolutely great. Solid, responsive, good layout etc. Soundcard works great. I know that for some having no pitch fader makes them not an option, but I felt that I wouldnt use it much and have a dial setup for that in case.

The mappings though are way behind, (as in still no T2 mapping yet) and since it seems that have not sold many of these, there just are not any mappings I could find.

So I've been playing with mapping... its a total pain. I think I might have to buy a Traktor Bible (but was kind of hoping not to have to)

The questions I wanted to ask were what are some good resources online for mapping?

Also, when setting up Traktor effects, what effects would anyone recommend to be linked to 4 encoders? I have an understanding of linking multiple effects, and I actually did create a mapping for ArmyofOnes great sweep chained effect which really is awesome. But I still was hoping to get some input on recommended effect setups.

Anyways the rest of the mapping I worked on this weekend seems solid except for effects, so if anyone has any recommendations on good settings, that would be awesome! Thanks.

    Default One other question

I wanted to ask also, is there a way that, when Traktor loads, all of the sample deck volumes can be set to minimum instead of maximum?

Wait, you're controlling the 4 FX banks with 4 encoders, or just 4 FX?

I think the Gater, Filter (if you don't have it elsewhere), and Delay are all good options. I'm also partial to F92-LFO, the Phaser (awesome for builds), and the Formant Filter, which is really expressive if you work it.

The sample deck thing - I don't think so, but you can have a button that sets them all at zero. Or you can have the play button for the samples also drop the volume.

Sounds like you are just getting started with mapping which is great!

You can check my YouTube channel (link in sig) First go to my playlists. I have collected a few good ones for starting out mapping info in that play list.

The DJTT blog articles have tons of good mapping and FX articles, and videos. Even if you don't own a VCI-100 or midi fighter, alot of good info are in those videos and articles also.

At the top of this forum there is a sticky titled midi mapping tips and tricks.

The Traktor Bible is a must IMO. And http://www.traktorbible.com has some good info and resources.

Doing a search of the General discussion forum will bring up a few threads on Fx combos.

To make the sample decks' volume 0, just map a button to do it. if you don't want to use one on your controller, just make your own keyboard mapping.

Mapping can be tedious, so just take it in steps. Label your mappings in the comments column, it will save alot of time later when you need to tweak things, or change things up. Which you will do as your mapping skills progress. The best teacher is by doing. Working out problems and searching for answers will all be part of it.

Thanks a lot for your comments. It definitely is hard to know where to start with this stuff as there is information at all levels of experience. I really liked the armyofone's video as she broke it down in such a way that it was easy to understand both how to do the mappings and what it does.

I'll pick up the Traktor Bible then. I was kind of hoping to find either a search engine of all traktor midi commands with details or a searchable pdf. But I guess an actual book would be ok too. heh.

As far as what I was thinking for the 4 encoders on the Reloop was to either have each control individual chained effects, or have each control a group of effects. (like superknobs... but not necessarily as fancy as armyofone's) So I wasnt sure what other people were generally doing with encoders. (like it is easier to set them up to simply reflect the layout of an FX unit, but then you can only really control one or 2 types of fx at a time. And with other combos like instant gratification and superknobs, the effects being used are often changing anyways, so seemed best to decide what each encoder would be and set the specific effect to it.

I'll try some of the one's you mentioned. Maybe after this I'll start another thread and people can post their favourite effects combos/setup. What Traktor could really use is being able to inport/export just all the commands for say one button or encoder, etc. That way, rather than having a whole .tsi file, just the commands for each purpose can be imported. (for example each button on an instant gratification mapping.) On import a new midi note should be able to be assigned to incorporate into anyone's setup.

That way, instead of having a bunch of .tsi mappings done by different people for all kinds of different gear, (or having to do them from scratch for new/uncommon gear) there could be libraries of command groups that serve different functions that are common Traktor regardless of what controller is used. People could just browse a website of .tsi elements to build a full mapping. Would be cool.
