True that, but it's not Technics that started the insanity. All kind of crap by other brands is selling for ridiculous prices, be it hifi turntables, dj turntables, cdjs, controllers. Technics is just adequately positioning their quality in the post mk2 market. They are not a good will charity that would fight the injustice and help poor djs buy top quality turntable for cheap, they are here for profit as everyone else, including the OEMers who sell bs for the price of an MK2.

Not really. When you compare it to other turntables on the market, the VL12 is $900, plx1000 is $700, and the STR8-150 is $600. Now you compare that to the price of 1200 refurbs being $850 to $1,100, the price does remain at an equivalent value.

Yes, you can purchase a set of 1200's and refurb them yourself. Sadly (and it's something that helps subsidize my income), the average user does not have the knowledge to refurb on their own. Yes, you can find used 1200's for $3-500 a piece, but parts are becoming more and more scarce (for OEM parts). When I replace a tonearm, thats a $100-175 parts cost depending one what I am able to find. That's just the tonearm. For a full refurb (faceplate, re-calibration, platter reconditioning, etcetera) the price goes up from there.

    And the VL12 is overpriced.

You can say that, but even at bottom of the barrel super-oem, you are spending $5-600. So, paying $1k for something that will last forever is not a bad investment. Ive burned through a couple Super-OEM's, while I have an OG pair of tech 1200 MK2's from 1979 that still play like brand new.

Now, take inflation into account. I believe the MSRP of the 1200 MK2 was around $300. After inflation, that comes out to around $900-1k.

The same argument can be stated about most mass produced electronics in the music world, but without the exaggerated pricing, ROI's would be too long to get investors on board.
