Default Upgrade 500 GB HD: To partition or NOT partition?

Updating a Macbook Pro with Seagate 7200 RPM SATA drive...

I've read pros and cons about partitioning... with higher speeds to be had on the periphery of the disc, but also some lag with partition access when audio in different partition. the general consensus I have found is that partitions are not necessary under MacOS and no real benefit is to be had by having partitions... unless one needs to reformat the system disc with ease... which I have never had to do on any mac for 10 years.

    Any opinions?

I am not going to partition... I have another 500 gb matching drive in a mobile firewire case that I will back up to.

Good article here.... playing media from a different partition is like having the needle jump a large fragment to find the audio... on Macs.. do not partition your drive. Back up frequently or run your audio off of another physical drive... preferably firewire.
