Encoding structure and payments

Hey guys

Teiresias brought up a point in the mp3 thread and it got me thinking. So, to all the musicians, producers, etc:

When I buy a WAV file from beatport or an mp3 I pay two different prices. Does the artist make more money off of the WAV file? If I buy a track from emusic do they get paid the same amount as if I buy an mp3 from Beatport?

Just curious.

I reckon the extra money is going to the sellers for the extra bandwidth, but that is just a guess.

Im quite shure the prices differ, it depends on the store selling it. Maybe it alsosometimes depends on the artists popularity, I bet Robbie Williams gets more than Carl Cox.

The deal most of the time according to my short experience releasing tracks, is a that the record labels keep a percnetage (big one ) of the sales and the artist get the rest. You get less money if somebody buy the track from a site which cahrges less. If you buy wav the artist gets the percentage from that purchase. So it do matter where and how you buy it.

The reason I don't feel that I'm ripping anyone off is that I've assumed the difference in pricing is solely down to the additional bandwidth ... if I'm wrong then maybe I need to change the way I do things.

I suppose its a bit like when you could buy the 7" or 12" . The 12 was always more expensive but didnt always have extra tracks on it.
