    Default Numark total control issues

Hi, I'm just getting started as a bedroom DJ hopefully I'll be able to play parties and join the student radio when I start university in september.

I've been using traktor and bought a Numark Total Control. I know some people say it's a "plastiktoy" but really I think it does the job i need pretty well and has a very user friendly layout for traktor.

My problem is the TC stops working when I connect my USB sound card (just a very small cheap single output device).

I have 1 root USB port so swapping the devices around different ports hasn't helped. I have tried using a power cable for the TC but it made no difference. I have yet to try a powered hub because I can't find one among my friends, would it help?

    My laptop specs are:
    Windows 7
    2.1Ghz AMD Athlon dual core
    4GB DDR2 ram

One last thing, I'm using asio4all, and always have to even when the monitor headphones are not connected because traktor crashes when i connect it straight to the internal Realtek card. Is it possible to not use asio4all? If not is it possible to use other audio programs such as youtube at the same time as traktor? If nothing else the current situation is a pain because i need to close other programs before opening traktor not just stop audioplayback.

thanks soooo much to anyone who can help I have been struggling to find any information on it searching online.

I have the Numark Total Control as well and I have had some issues that happen when selecting a sound card in Traktor and having it crash. I do not really know the root of this problem however it still lets me select my sound card it just has two names for it on the selection screen for some reason, so I just have to select the one that doesn't bring down Traktor most of the time. As for the soundcard, I have heard that you need to run the DJ/IO sound card with the program or at least get the updates from it, this is the soundcard Numark has made for the Total Control. I am not too knowledgable about the technical shit but this is just what I have heard/thing. So may be look up things about where to download the DJ/IO update or something like that. Hope this helps/what you are looking for.

The conflict between the 2 devices seems to be pretty fundamental. It doesn't just involve Traktor, when I connect the TC second it comes up with an error message saying the hardware is unrecognisable.

I'm just wondering... even if the DJ I/O works, could it end up being a right pain later down the line if i get more into DJing and need a high quality sound card for a club night? Does you know if the DJ I/O is good enough?

I might just go to the local digital village shop and see if they'll let me just sit there trying sound cards and buy whatever works.

I don't really know too much about soundcards, however the DJ/IO seems like a pretty good beginner sound card. It has 2 outputs, 1headphone and 1 mic input. From my current standpoint (and possibly somewhat naive) I would say that I don't have any future plans to update my sound card at the moment, 2 outputs seems like all I need for now, however if you're really looking to update it I would go for one of the Native Instruments sound cards because they're offering free upgrades to Traktor Pro/Traktor Scratch Pro. Hope this helped Andy!

Well hopefully if your playing in a club your gonna have something besides a Numark TC don't get me wrong I love mine and it's great to learn on but I can't see myself playing in a club with it. I've already been planning my upgrades to bigger and better EQ.

The VCI-100 seems to be the step up but what makes it actually better? Looking at it, it seems like the design is a bit less intuitive if anything. (for me it's just that there are fewer knobs for effects control) I'm guessing the total control would degrade quite a lot from frequent use but would it be stupid to use it in a club just as a one-off situation?

I agree somewhat, however with a little inginuity (sp?) and creativity anything can be done. I'm planning my next move to be something along the lines of the Novation Launch Pad which would give me most capabilities I do not have with the Total Control.

I would definitely feel more comfortable with another controller handy, but I do agree aside from the quality the TC really is a good controller that can give you a lot of mapping possibilities in Traktor. Along with a good side kick controller you can definitely do some work with it.

I have rocked lots of college parties with a Total Control and a LPD8. It's not the cost of the controller, its how you use it - check out my youtube video on my TC mapping. How I see it, the VCI-100 is more expensive since its made of metal and because it has the touch sensitive jogg wheels. Since I don't care about the TC being plastic (its in a gear case so I'm the only one looking at it most of the time) and I don't scratch, it's great for my needs. In fact, I much prefer its simple layout to the VCI-100's more complex layered modes. The really big difference between the two is more complicated features for advanced users, for example super knobs (on/off notes for faders at top, bottom, and half)

I just wish more VCI-100 users and controllerists would apply the same "it's not the gear, its how you use it" principle so oft heard in vinyl vs. cd vs. laptop debates to controller choice. The TC is a perfectly respectable piece of kit and if I show up at a club in the future with it and they don't like it, too bad for them. It's what I rock and if I can play just as good as the next guy, what's the difference.

I haven't had any problems with it connection wise (using a Mac) or hardware wise after a year of use.

I'm actually using your mapping at the minute stormeagle it's awesome! I'm going to make my own once i know i have the time to sit down and do it right.
I've been thinking of getting another controller at some stage, preferably something to try beat juggling on or make it easier to run more than 2 decks (planning to set up some simple beats made in ableton alongside mixing songs together eventually)

What do you use the LPD8 for? it looks pretty good.

@stormeagle You are the man and I definitely agree with this. It's all about how you use your tools not how much they cost. It seems like some people on this blog are made of money and as much as I envy them, I am not so I have to make do with what I can buy at the time. $300 not only bought me a good controller with a sound card and an amazing program but it opened the doors for my creativity. Any links to specific youtube videos?
