sounds really bad man, only problems i've ever had is when certain room mates are way messier than me and don't really care that we all have to share a kitchen. Even then i'm pretty laid back when it comes to most things.
Never really found myself in a TERRIBLE renting situation.

When you live in shared houses you tend to find that the people with the least possessions are the ones that are the most keen to share/borrow/steal.
They masquerade with a "hey man id share with you, dont be selfish" attitude. And give you all that "dont be so caught up with material things dude".
A 50% share of nothing = fuck all.
These kinds of people are actually more selfish than those with stuff they want to protect.
Bring Something To The Table and You Can Sit At The Table. Bring Nothing and You Get Nothing In Return.
When I first moved out I shared a house with someone I had known for about 7 years. We went to high school together and worked at 3 jobs together. He was a terrible slob, he would leave food that could spoil out in random places, hide dishes in the stove or cabinets and then invite people over and tell them that I was the messy one, only I didn't know he was telling people that. He never had any money so he was always eating my food and he apparently only thought one needed to shower once every 7-10 days. He didn't own a computer, so he used mine and constantly downloaded porn. I was forever cleaning up viruses and malware from it, so much so that I just gave it to him when he moved out. When he did end up moving out, 2 months before the lease was up, he stiffed me for the last 2 months rent, in addition to 2 months from the year where he didn't have the money so I gave him the money. To top it all off, he stole a bunch of my DVD's when he left.
About 18 months after all of that he had the balls to call me because he needed to borrow $300 to make rent at his new place!!!!
Ended our friendship.
A little bit of gold and a pager.
i got myself a house and a mortgage and I have to put my brother up that is the worst he works 4 days a week and spends 3 days glued to team fortress 2 he never cleans and makes a hideous amount of mess then he invites his mates round and they make loads of mess then he does not clean up. then he complains i play my tunes too loud at 11 am......i tend to keep quiet for a while then have a mega meltdown screaming match with him.... which usually comes to blows, he broke my ribs once, take into consideration he is a fat fuck. lesson is never let family move in once you move away from them.
friends can be just as bad had two mates living in the house for a while the one lets call him Ant started getting frisky with the other's lets call him Chris's girlfriend while he was at work had to kick Ant out when i caught him and her in the act did not tell chris till ant had moved out to avoid murder's but even though he knew he still stayed with her so every time she was round she would look at me with a face like thunder. I'm obviously a bit of a pushover haha

Those are same shitty roommates I'm not gonna lie thou in my younger days I was one of those shitty roommates I bailed early on a lease. Now I wasn't on the lease but I realize now how much I prolly screwed over the people who were my friends.
In Holland it's very common to use contracts when you have housemates. If they bail, or break stuff, you sue 'm and I know for sure there are billions of no cure no pay lawyers in the US, so once a person signs a contract they can be damn sure to get sued if they break it...

It was actually the lease I just got out of of June 1. We had a massive house and there were 6 of us...5 of us moved out and cleaned the house all up while one decided to stay. In the last couple days he threw parties where windows were smashed, furniture was stollen and the house was in general disarray, because of his being a dick our landlord kept $400 of the 600$ security deposit from each of us...That was supposed to money towards my dvs setup
