If you want a good mic to use during video shoots a lav mic is the best bet. There's plenty of those in the $150 range that are good. The SM58 is also a good mic that's damn near bullet proof, or so I read.

Would anyone recommend any microphones that hook up to your shirt (i think they're called lapel mics?)

keep in mind that for most mic's you'll need a preamp with phantom power which will add to the cost. if you want a decent mic just for recording into a computer, check out the rode podcaster.

It really depends on what type of mic you have. The majority of cardioid/dynamic mic's(the shure sm58 included) do not require phantom power. Now on the other hand, all condenser mic's need phantom power.

They're called lavaliere mics. Are you going to hook it straight to a video camera or run it through a mixer?

I'd wanna use it out for live performances. That is if those kinds of mics can be used in those situations. I just like having my hands free.

Not laughing, gear is always amazing value for money, I have a Behringer PA system and it gets nothing but positive responses. Their DJ mixers get a slating but have no complaints with their other equipment. I own a small 4 channel mixer for the last 6 years and it has never failed. Might pick up one of those mics as a backup.
