So, why is it on some decks??

Collide
in a club its fairly dark so it helps to see the grooves in the vinyl so you knew where the second track started or where the break in the track was etc.
This used to come in handy before dvs, when you had to actually look at a record to see when a drop/break was coming up.
do the LED mod and use it to land airplanes...

Even with DVS the old pin light comes in very handy for lighting up the spaced out grooves/minute markers on Traktor control vinyl.
In darker environments the light is essential for reading real wax. Reading the records groove shades is an art in itself and something I miss. Always gratifying nailing a perfect double drop just by looking at the distance the two needle's has to travel, especially challenging when one records traveling at 33rpm and the other at 45.
Funny really, I remember how lost I was when first started to use DVS and waveforms. But now a few years on when I occasionally spin real Vinyl I catch my self out, as I'll look to my screen to check the waveform that isn't there.
And it's kinda funny to look at the patterns created by very repetitive tunes...
I'd say the light can be useful when diagnosing a skipping problem which can hardly be seen apart from inside traktor..

I'm not that old, but it kinda irks me to read "vinyl player", more than seeing every cd deck called "cdj", "cd turntable" or worse "cdj turntable". And it's called the target light!

LMAO. Totally stealing this.<getoffmylawn>
also useful for seeing if your turntable is calibrated (thats what the dots around the platter ring are for)
and rolling up fatties is hard in the dark.
