Default about to buy my first Mac. a little help please. :)

    Hi guy's

After reading loads of stuff and the many posts on here I'm still unsure weather to make the jump. sorry for another mac post btw.

My best friend who's a graphic designer Has purchased a new macbook pro and I have first dibs on his old well cared for one. The specs are

    Late 2006 macbook pro model
    17" screen
    3 gig of ram
    core 2 duo processor

My main concern, is this to old to make it worth buying? Any other issues I should look out for? Can they be serviced at all?

My current laptop Toshiba has pretty much the same specs but is only 10 months old. I'm only really just going for the Mac stability and to get away from the ground loop problem mine has, after trying several things to fix it.

Thanks in advance for your help

if the price is right, make the jump no doubt! i will never go back to windows! might want to try to keep both if thats possible, sometimes compatibility is a small problem. not with audio and what not, but your software/game selection is somewhat smaller and more costly

I am running Live with Decadance and Digital Performer Komplete 5 and tons of other high cpu stuff on a 2007 2.1 core 2 duo with 4 gigs. that machine should be perfect for what you need. it will be viable for another 3-4 years potentially.

Do it. Nothing wrong with those specs at all.

My mac dual boots into Window XP using Bootcamp which comes with all Macs that have an intel chip I believe. You have to have a full copy of Windows, but it is possible and pretty easy to set up.

Id put Snow Leopard on it too, the OS is the main thing that dates it and Snow Leopard is the latest...

I'd maybe try and haggle him down a little more if i were you. £425 sounds like a lot more of a bargain for some reason....

It's a good buy, you can put 6GB of ram in it for around £100 as well. I have had my Macbook Pro for nearly 4 years and it still runs as well as the day I got it. In fact I'm reluctant to get a new one although the body of mine has seen better days.
