Me personally I got my first set of belt drive tables and a pos mixer from an older kid for a mexican strat that I had. This was back in 95 or so. Also more ot, but if you are 21, willing to work (ie lift heavy ass shit all day) and not afraid of heights, the natural gas industry is booming out in western PA and in the TX panhandle/Western OK area. just an idea...

I had to work and save almost every penny for all my gear, unfortunately had to sell off a bunch of stuff (Tech 1200s, MPC 2000XL, Microkorg, but kept all my guitars) for school and am in the process of saving up again for a Kontrol S4. If you look hard enough I'm sure you'll find a job, I washed dishes for a couple years and worked my way up to a waiter and was raking in the cash before the economy went to shit, if you're motivated you'll find a way.
