    Default digitalizing my vinyl

    Hi guys,

I'm thinking about finally digitalizing my vinyl collection slowly but surely. I have some old turntables lying around but not liking the sound quality of recording this through my audio 8 dj + Audacity too much. I find the difference with bought mp3's too big.

I was wondering if those newer tables with USB out would have drastic improvement when it comes to the quality recording. Does anybody have experience with the ION Profile USB turntable for instance? It's a pretty cheap turntable, but i figure I would only use it for these recordings.

^^^ Ion Profile USB is pretty crappy.

My 2c: it is very important to use a stylus that is in good shape. Maybe yours isn't? If so, change the stylus or perhaps even get a decent cartridge.

Connect the TT directly to one of the stereo inputs of the A8 which feature phono preamps (there are only two). DON'T go through a mixer. In the NI audio control panel, select Phono. (I don't have it in front of me right now but it's called Phono or Recording or something like that.) Set the gain to 0db. Engage "quartz lock" on the TT.

Clean the record prior to recording. Don't do noise removal in Audacity (the effect available there isn't any good). In fact, to keep things simple, you might want to skip noise and click removal entirely. As a last step prior to converting the audio to MP3, don't forget to normalize (press CTRL-A and then select Effect --> Normalize, press OK).

thanks for the tips. A trip along the catalogue of Beatport quite quickly gave me the insight i need to record, as half of the songs aren't on there.
Hmm, my TT's are shite, will have to get a new one to record that black gold.

the tt itself wont make much difference, aslong as the platter speed doesn't drift too much. if you have a good cart and stylus, you should be grand
