It's Kylo Ren, a new character written for the movie.

When Abrams took over Star Trek, he forbade anyone who'd worked on a previous Star Trek to work on his movie (save the obvious counterexample). When he and disney took over Star Wars, they ejected the entire expanded universe from cannon (one source: http://roqoodepot.com/2014/01/07/jj-...est-for-canon/). The only things that "happened" are movies 1 - 6 and the clone wars cartoon. Other pieces of the expanded universe may or may not be included later....but probably not if disney, lucasfilm, or marvel don't own the rights (e.g., all of the dark horse comics).

So....my point is that luke never went dark.

Now, as far as them throwing out well over 90% of canon...

Hmm I hadn't seen that, I didn't think they would follow the books/EU verbatim but I thought they would be loosely based around what's already out there.
