    I was also thinking of using my monitiors ( hi-fi ) they rock pritty loud though, they are old aiwa's but have better volume than i have herd out of pro speakers.

    Those KRKs will handle 30-40 people without breaking a sweat. Just place them appropriately so that there's some sort of dance floor area separate from the talking/shouting area, otherwise you'll get some people constantly trying to turn it up. That's where you'll start to have problems.
