an external drive speed is normally 5400rpm, a fast hard drive is 7200rpm.
even then the transfer rate of usb is nto fast enough for audio work (if you have a firewire hard drive thats heaps better).

there are some laptops now with esata and laptop externals with esata

Tracks are loaded into the ram so the eternal hdd is not an issue. It is to do with shielding as his setup works fine at home.
so it is somthing outside of his setup leaking in causing the issue
To answer an earlier question. USB 3.0 has a faster transfer speed then FireWire so it won't matter.
Tombruton, I believe (and I could be wrong) tracks are previewed in software and there waveforms cached for playback and waveform view but the entirety of a track (the data of the whole song) is not cached because it's heavy on ram.
That's why when u take out ur external half way thru a song it won't play till the end.
Not ruling out cabling or leaking, but I beleive that's wat it is
