Have you checked the input is specified in audio preferences for line input ? If audiacity wont work I'm guessing its your config ?

Use audio port for: Sound Input should be selected from the input section.

I've always used Audacity, sounds like you don't have a setting correct or the cable plugged in to the input on the computer.

Yeah Audacity works just fine for me.

You have to select line in from the preferences menu. Audacity for some reason always defaults to the mic in.

This is definitely a setup issue, and Audacity is one of the best simple free software that won't tax your system. How do you have it plugged into the computer? Are you plugging it straight into the 1/8" jack? Or using an interface of some sort? What model mac are you running with what version of OSX?

I think it's probably something really simple that's going on here. Make sure to check your preferences in Audacity for the proper input setting first off. Let us know! We'll figure this out.
