Apc40 problems

hi, i bought an apc40 from the usa the other day. its virtually brand new
BUT
it has the wrong plug for my uk socket(it has a usa plug)
so i bought an adapter which says 'for shavers only' on ebay.
but it still doesnt work.
is this to do with the shaver thingy, the fact the adapter is realllyy cheap, or something else?
is it meant to light up before u open ableton etc?
OR
should i just buy an official akai power supply for it.

cut off the plug and wire up the one you use in your house.
Or get an adapter.
