    Default Old music!

    Hi guys, me again!

I know i have posted a few times asking about what music to get etc, so you probably think I'm a rubbish DJ! But i am only 18, so I'm mid-studies for my A levels and about to go to uni so i don't have much time!

i DJ loads of 18th's which is great as i know exactly what to play... but my best mates mum has asked us to DJ her 50th birthday which isn't exactly my type of music!

Shes asked for 70's, 80's etc all the way up to the music now!

I'd love a bit of help on all the 'older' stuff (old for me anyways!) anything that was really popular back then and will do well at her party!

    THANKS!

God 70's and 80's music? That's, well, painfully broad. Whatever you do, play a LOT of Journey. Like, just play all their albums. Over and over and over again.

It might be easier just to get his mom to give you specific ideas. Saying "Play anything from the last 40 years" is a big red flag.

You're joking, right? In the time it took you to write that post you could have googled God knows how many 70's/80's Greatest Hits Albums. Get some of the earlier "Now That's What I Call Music" compilations.

Here's a crazy idea - ask her what music/bands/singers/groups she likes? Then get a few albums and pick the stand out singles from them.

Now, I know we don't advocate torrent sites here at DJTT - but you can read the .nfo files (so I've heard...) on those "100 Hit's from 80's"/"Best of 80's"/"Greatest 80's"/"80's No. 1's", etc... At least then you'll have an idea of what artists were popular back in the day. Some starters are:

    Adam Ant (Awesome!)
    Human League
    Freeze
    Joy Division
    Frankie Goes to Hollywood
    Boy George/Culture Club
    MICHAEL JACKSON!!!
    PRINCE!!!
    Madonna
Morrissey (If you're into that kind of thing... I'm NOT!)
    Madness
    The Specials
    Bad Manners

DJ's have it SO easy with the internet. Don't waste your time waiting for chumps like us to respond to your posts...

UK music for me! That's why I left off Bon Jovi (Boo!) and Guns n' Roses (Double Boo!)

If I was gonna DJ at a 80's night - I think I'd just play DJ Scene's 2080's Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. 2 of the greatest mixes I've ever heard!

[EDIT: AND DJ Yoda's 80's How to Cut and Paste 80's Edition, AND DJ Spinbad's 80's Megamix 1 & 2 and Rock the Kasbah... Some blinders right here, son).

If you want advice from someone the wrong side of 35, then pick what can be described as classic tracks of their genre. Don't get too hung up on finding rarities and don't underestimate the power of nostalgia. If you can get the basics of Djing right (playing what the crowd want to hear) then you will do fine.

So a little bit of Disco, Funk, Pop, Soul, Rock and maybe even Punk if you're feeling risqué.
