I'd go for the real mixer over the s4 since with the s4 you'd need to carry the bulk thing to wherever your gig is while with a soundcard you take that instead. I'd probably drop the X1 and spend a little more money on turntables though.
i already have the turntables so it is a case of getting a new mixer and a soundcard that will run Traktor I thought the s4 would kill 2 birds with one stone ? or is it not as brilliant as its made out to be
Yeah that'd be cool, but it's just not ideal for playing out. It makes a really nice bedroom set up though.
idk what Popinjay is talking about .... but IMO the S4 is IDEAL for playing out. maybe not in a club with a crowded booth...... but the odd bar or other gig its fantastic. (and if you know ahead of time what your dealing with i dont see how it could be incredibly hard to construct something to bring into a booth to put on top of CDJs or TTs to use the S4....
literally.... power - usb - RCAS ----> then turn on the computer and boot traktor and away the tunes go. 10 min setup tops.

As in anywhere with 2 turntables will have a mixer. A mixer that you probably would have to move out the way in order to set up the s4 between unless you want to have the turntables no where near your mixer. Not exactly ideal when you could just set up a sound card in exactly the same way and you don't have to carry nearly as much gear around with you.
im just saying that theres ways around the whole (two tts and a mixer setup) with the s4. with enough planning and a few 2x4s/plywood... you could make something.
dont let "size" be a huge issue with you over choosing the s4 or not. as its really not that big. (people make it out to be MASSIVE)

it mite not be massive but its easier to carry a sound card and an x1.
