There's a reason they don't.
First, the default linux kernel does not schedule tasks in real time. So, it's susceptible to something like DPC latency with a different system. I mean…there is a real-time version of the linux kernel that fixes those issues and gives performance similar to OS X on most of the hardware I've seen it used on, but you have to configure/compile it yourself…which isn't a big deal for a computer geek. But a normal person? Please.
And then you're worried about your Jack config.
And completely un-standardized hardware.
Think about all the little computer issues that we see on these forums. Think about all the stupid sh*t people do. Now make them learn about compilers, kernel configurations, hardware that may or may not be up to the task, USB and/or firewire controllers that don't work properly, bad drivers, and software that's supported only by hobbyists.
I love Linux. I love using it for a lot of things. In a lot of ways, I prefer it to OS X. But adding linux support for these software packages isn't as simple as choosing a different build target…it adds a whole host of complexity to a software/hardware system that a LOT of users are barely capable of running in the kind, user-friendly, sandboxed worlds of Windows and OS X.
Trying to run something like Traktor, Ableton, or Maschine on Linux would just frustrate most people and lead to ridiculous headaches for the support for the software vendors like Aleton, Avid, NI, etc..
Frankly, I think it's a terrible idea for the masses. And considering that Ardour, Mixxx, and the other linux-based production and DJ apps are so in their infancy even after all this time…the demand just isn't there from the Linux community.
Which is why I said it in the magical I wish fairy tale thread, silly.
lol…i actually want the things i asked for…
Oi!
its an "if only" not "I wish fairy tale" thread bubba
If only there was fewer distros to choose from maybe they would - we'll never know
What's the number of distros got to do with it?
I want all the things I asked for. Except maybe the macbook usb ports thing, I don't really care about that.
Beer proof laptop with traktor/serato/whatever on any OS you desire, a brand new audio 8 dj connected up to turntables with unskippable needles and every mixer has an innofader. Oh my.
Because not everything works exactly the same on every distro (unless your willing to play around and compile stuff yourself) and theres power in numbers. What's the number of distros got to do with it?
How about unscratchable Vinyl .. or get one of theseturntables with unskippable needles

Yeah but you just release it and then people will compile a package for each distro and then stick it in a repository somewhere.
Fuck knows I can't compile anything and yet I still use programs without official packages.
That laser thing looks pretty cool. I wonder how accurate it is.
if only soundcloud gave me 12 hours of upload time for free instead of 9 euros/month - meh still a bargain.
