Software cleanup might be a good thing, but is still tricky. It may take a lot of time and effort to clean it all up properly, knowing all the drivers (w/ versions), settings, etc, etc ... you'll end up with multiple uninstalls & reinstalls of certain softwares. There's always a risk of having to put much more time fixing stuff and the benefit is questionable.
a rebuild of the whole OS is what's worth to do once in a while, imo. (though, I haven't done a single one since i got the mbp in '09). If you really feel a clean up is needed, than that's a proper clean-up. And you'll probably end up with faster & potentially more stable computer.
