I use my MBP for everything, my Windows laptop has more or less become just a screen to watch netflix on.

It's my workhorse and is on at least 18 daily hours, normally without any partition (I've had a secondary one for a few months now to test lion).

If you are worried about general internet crap, just make a new DJing user, no need to dual/tripple boot.

I use mine for everything, and couldn't find a compelling reason to partition the drive (a separate partition for /tmp? Seriously, couldn't be bothered)

Interestingly, a PC won't boot from separate partitions unless the OS is installed on those partitions either - I'm a little confused why you think it would?

I don't know, but the OSX license may allow you to install 2 copies on a single machine so that you can have a clean setup for DJing (I'd be surprised if it wasn't allowed).

The other (and much, much simpler) solution to have a clean setup is setting up a user account for each of these purposes. I started doing this, but stalled on the "having to share the iTunes library across accounts" because it works fine, and sharing the library seemed like work.\

i have 2 macbooks (one pro) use them for everything never had a problem
they are real work horses with no slowdown.

if you wanna clean cache's and stuff get a program called "clean my mac"

use it for everything but gaming, so i second paddys 18 hours. reboot every 3-4 weeks .

2 PC's - Acer (Travelmate 5720) for work, Asus (N61J) for music. In the medical profession, and my entire patient database and accounting system sits on the Acer with off-site auto back-up, and back-up to an external iomega HD. Asus only has W7, iTunes, Nero and TP2/S4 installed. Backed-up to a Transcend external HD. Uses USB3.0 - which FLIES. Sorry if I sound like a spoilt brat, but I'm not prepared to lose both work AND play in the case of an 'event'.

Multiple installs are pointless on OS X. So is being paranoid about setup. Just don't do anything stupid.

Also, partitioning the drive but not installing an OS on each one is even more pointless…all it does is waste more disk space on your file system and metadata and make Spotlight take more time to keep indexes in check. If your "normal" OS is accessing the other partitions, it effectively isolates nothing.

Go download ClamXAV and run it on specific files whenever you download things or get files from anyone you don't trust, but there's no reason to enable on-access scanning.

Onyx is cool if you have a clue what you're doing.

And, sorry, but half the point of a Mac is that you don't have to do stupid BS to keep them stable…the other half is that you can do ridiculous, deep, geeky things if you know how…which you appear not to. Oh well…I only care because I'm a geek.

Seriously…I've been running Macbooks and MBPs as my only daily computers since 2006, I've never done any ridiculous optimizations, I've never used multiple installs (except for some stuff that I had to do on Linux), I've never used multiple users…and I've never had a serious problem with any software except Pro Tools…and that was more a result of Avid's slow update cycle and my impatience than anything else.

Even running apache and mysql servers and a dev environment on my daily-use computer hasn't make Traktor or Ableton unstable.

If I had more money, I'd probably buy a netbook…but then I'd want software on it to fart around when I wasn't doing anything at work…which means it'd have to be a Macbook Air (I use Logic)…which would just frustrate me, and then I'd have to worry about which computer I had with me and my normal MBP would stay in my car trunk instead of my laptop bag…which seems like a worse idea in Atlanta's 95+ degree heat and parking on the street in midtown 7 days a week.

So, yeah…my DJing/Production MBP is kind of my only computer (I have others for specific things, but they stay at home), and I haven't had problems. The only thing I'd change is that I'd buy them in pairs if I were touring and set up some scripts to keep one a bootable clone of the other delayed by a couple days in case something happened instead of just using my "old computer" as a backup and sorta-kinda trying to keep the music folders sync'd.

with the amount of money people on this drop on controllers and shite every week :P why not by a netbook for internet time... i use a netbook for dj'ing, have a pc that is fairly good for production and i download all my porn on that (but might upgrade the ram one day ), then just use my ipad for internet with no problems
