edit: ikea has pretty good tables for djing if your looking to buy one

I have an Expedit shelf and Vika Amon table top sitting on top of it. That puts the top of my Turntables just below my belly button and gives me more room on top than just the shelf.

You want it 6 inches below the top of your head? The instructable link I posted talks about using one of the iKea TV stands and putting it on top of the shelf.

I think I'm going to go with four of these brackets though and do some lighting underneath. I've got lots of rope light that would look cool under there.
