    some sketchup fun

    Parts list:

    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40051196 2x $14.99 each
    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20054563 3 packs $10 each
    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70103085 2x $69.99 each
    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00011013 1x $29.99
    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50103618 2x 6.99 each

    $242 total

I am also looking into lighting: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50192365 maybe 2 of these for one color LED light strip in each of the front cubes, then I would leave it open or put a plexiglass panel in front

+80 with two light kits and another $40 if I add a plexiglass panel for the front

The expedits will fit my 2x technics and S4 perfectly. My only thing is the shelf is a little narrow at 10", just enough for a laptop but too small for my maschine and apc40

That't the last piece to figure out. Anyone know how high you have to raise it? I don't have my turntables here but will probably use some sort of shelf if there is one the right thickness or I will use a piece of plywood.

This last design looks cool.... But will that shelf hold all that weight? Aren't most parts from ikea just particle board?

You have a point I may have to bolt through in some places if just screwing isn't enough. I may have to spread the bottom two angle pieces further apart or use 3-4 metal angle pieces on the bottom between the long shelf and the expedit so there isn't a big cantilever that the speakers would be stressing.

edit: I'm thinking 4 capita angle pieces, one centered above each cub on the bottom. I think then there would be no problem. I'm not worried about the wood breaking, just a little concerned that it can be hard to screw securely into it since it isn't very dense.

One thing I did see on another build somewhere was the use of another two angled steels but placing them sloping the other way. It doesn't look as nice but does give more support.

Interesting. I think I'll definitely use 4 on the bottom but I will keep them all angled the same direction. I will see how securely it screws into the particle board. I can always use bigger screws. I'll see how it looks with crossing them but if I can avoid it I would like to.

I just had an idea... If I use a narrower laptop shelf I can have the speaker stands be separate from it. I can bolt two angle pieces together so one is on top of the other and the sort of jag out and then back in and the top mount is directly above the bottom mount so the force would be straight down. I wish I could find two stainless steel straight pieces with flanges but attaching two angled together is an option.
