Bringing DJ equiptment across the border

I just bought a DJM-800 off Amazon, but the problem was they don't ship to Canada. So i shipped it to family in the States that's within driving distance. If i go to pick up my mixer from them, do I have to pay customs when I bring it back even if it's not in a box? I've checked the Canadian Border Service Agency website, but it's not very clear. Has anyone had any experiences with something like this, or know the protocol?

I wouldnt worry too much about it..I bring random stuff across all the time. If you tell the guy your visiting family and have an address and for whatever reason he searches your car as long is it doesnt look brand new...like the cords are not still twist tied together then i cant see them caring.

I doubt any border guard will have any idea of its true value or what it does. Maybe just have a couple answers prepared if he asks why its there. or even bring a couple other pieces of dj equipment so it doesnt look all by itself.

if you tell them it was bought in the US or is a US peice of equipment they will want you to pay duty and will want to see a receipt. (if you tell them its old and yours from canada and was just in the car....make sure the receipt is not)

Thanks for the advice! I'll just look up the maximum value allowed to bring back without taxing and just declare that. Where exactly are you located in Toronto?

I wouldnt do that unless you have more than 1 person in the car. Max is like 400 per person minimum stay 48hrs. Then you can at least say you split it. If you tell them the mixer is 400 and they question, you will have to show a receipt. Then you pay duty on the difference.

1. find a vcr, take out the insides and hide the mixer inside.

2. picking up my mixer i left at my families house.

3. bring some clothes with you and other things like laptop and headphones, and say you dj, and you brought it to practice while visiting family.
