Default I'm lost - [PA] decisions!

Hey guys, so I have this big gig coming up (it's the Indian new year) and I have been booked to play at the ball that the Sindhi (my community) hosts every year in L.A. This year I have been booked as the DJ. I'm getting paid a decent amount, and am supposed to provide my own speakers / lights.

I at first was going to rent the DJ equipment (I need very basic stuff for this event as it has been scaled down from last years 1000s people to this years 400 - and ticket prices have gone up ). They said last years DJ had brought - 3 QSC - 1000 watt speakers, 1 follow spot light stage lighting, 2 shure wireless microphones, and 3 LED intelligent dance lights setup on tree lighting. After a little while I thought maybe it might be better to just buy a PA package and rent the lights.

In addition I have been booked for a few other smaller gigs in the next few weeks / months as well that will require me to have my own sound and lighting so thats why I was thinking about just buying the PA system.

My budget on the PA package will be a little over $700ish if I buy it. What would you guys do in this situation? And which PA package would you buy if you would buy the PA's?

    Thanks for your help!

Rent one. 700$ is not really a budget which makes sense for buying a PA.

700 dollars won't be enough for a quality PA. Rent or push the budget to 2000.
Always better to buy quality that will last.

To be honest, your budget will get you a soundsystem that'll do 100 or so people. For 400, if you want to be more than background music, you need some bigger gear.

You could always invest in some 15" tops and rent some good subs/amps/crossovers to back up the system?

That's what I would do and start the process of building a proper system.
