Default The Sync Button Debate, Amsterdam Dance Event 2011

During the ADE conference a panel of nerds and DJs discussed the implications of the Sync button found in almost all DJ software. Watch the complete discussion in a video TraktorBible has recorded for you.

    http://traktorbible.com/video/ade201...nc-button.aspx

The Panel: Terry Weerasinghe (Native Instruments), Rik Parkinson (Pioneer), Baptiste Grange (Serato), Paul Hamill (Producer, DJ), Gregor Tresher (Producer/DJ), and Dave Clarke (DJ, Producer and Moderator of the Panel)

    Yeah it is.
But I was a bit disappointed. The panel missed the chance to dig deeper

    Two important aspects I missed:

Why is this discussion often so emotional? Are non digital DJs struggling with an DJ identity crisis? The definition of "DJ" has been changed by technology. Are the strong emotions and often hate feeling the outer signs of beeing scared and confused about what it means to be a DJ?

There is an economic side as well. DJ tools (hardware/software) have become a mass market product. And every manufacturer wants to sell as many products as possible. Making things easier and simple is one of the keys of increasing sales. DJing is not an elitist thing anymore.
We see this mass market targeting with products like the S4 and S2, and other integrated controllers, as well. All of them castrate the feature richness of Traktor to make the start easier.

Really interesting to hear Paul Hamill say that he once saw some DJs using Abelton in "arrange page" as he puts it. Interesting to hear him and the panel being quite shocked at this.

I think its a lot more common than they think.

HERVE plays like this. He played at my mates clubnight a few weeks back and got paid a LOT of money to tweak the EQ on a DJM800. He didnt even use a soundcard, he played out of the headphone output on his Macbook.
